CP+ 2017 (Preliminary Report)

It’s the end of February, we’ve just arrived at Pacifico Yokohama, and people everywhere have cameras around their necks, which can mean only one thing… The annual madness of one of the biggest Camera and Imaging technology shows in Asia, also known as CP+ in photography circles, is in full swing.

Happening every year at the aforementioned Pacifico Yokohama Convention Centre in the beautiful (even if it’s raining cats and dogs) port city of Yokohama, CP+ brings out the “Who’s Who” of the imaging technology world to showcase their latest offerings and drum up interest for their newest products and concepts.

Cameras

We stopped by Fujifilm to check out their medium format GFX 50S, which has the following specs:

This camera is more exciting to specialist photographers, since it introduces an entirely new system to Fuji’s lineup. The medium format digital mirrorless camera has a 51.4 megapixel sensor, and will work with three new GF lenses, including a 63mm F/2.8, a 32-64MM F4 zoom, and a 120mm F4 macro lens. The X-Processor Pro sensor, which is also in the X-Pro2 and X-T2 is on board here, and it’s scheduled for release in late February with an MSRP of $6,499, or ¥733,328.

Fighting through a large crowd of journalists all trying to get the scoop on Panasonic’s new flagship camera, we got a glimpse of their newest flagship, namely the Lumix DMC-GH5, which is capable of recording smooth, high-precision 4K 60p/50p and faithful 4:2:2 10-bit 4K video. It also features ‘6K PHOTO’2 which extracts approx.18-megapixel still images from ultra-high-quality video with approx. 9 times the pixel count of Full-HD.

On the way to the heavyweights in the camera world, namely Nikon and Canon, we ran into some old friends from California. I’m sure by now you’ve heard of the guys from Peak Design, who broke all records with their 6 million dollar backing of their Everyday Backpack on Kickstarter last year.

After a quick interview and catching up with them, we were able to get a quick glance at two new cropped-sensor cameras from Canon, the EOS Kiss X9i, and the 9000D.

That’s it for the first day. We’ll have much more information for you guys a bit later, as we need to process and edit all the videos we shot today. Keep your eyes peeled here for more updates from the show coming very soon!
