How to find fireworks festivals around Japan

(...because it's too difficult to list them all in one place!)

OK, I’ll admit, this article is a bit late actually. But we just launched our site last week, right in the middle of hanabi season so please pardon us for playing catch up. よろしくお願いします!

There are already about a bajillion-and-sixty-three sites out there that you can access to find out about the different fireworks festivals going on in your part of Japan — and remember, no part of Nippon goes without at least one of their solemn summer sultry evenings being turned into an “almost war zone” with the booms of fireworks, and yukata-clad crowds jamming every section of wherever anyone can get a clear view of the sky where the show is taking place. Even the nether-regions of Hokkaido, Shimane, Kashima, Oita, and points in between can expect some form of incendiary magic in the sky.

…So, if there are so many of these 花火大会 (hanbi-tai-kai) going on all over, how does one go about finding them?

The easiest way, and my prefered method is, “just Google it.” However there are a few little rules you have to remember, plus learning a tiny bit of Japanese will help aid your search:

  • Of course if you live in a place like Tokyo or Osaka, you can just type in fireworks Tokyo {some date} and you’ll likely get almost all the major festivals happening in the region. But I’ll bet you don’t come up with anything if you live in the middle of Gifu! (because I tried!)
  • In these cases, it helps to know Japanese. For example, let’s say I want to know when the next festival is happening around Toyama, a city on the Sea of Japan, north of the Tokai region. I’d type in 福井周辺の花火大会2015年. Let’s break that down…
  • 福井 is Fukui (could mean the city or the prefecture.)
  • 周辺 (しゅうへん・shuuhen) means “around or nearby”
  • and of course 花火大会2015年 is fireworks festival 2015.
  • You could add a date if necessary: 8月、今週、今月 which is ‘August’, ‘this week’, ‘this month’ respectively.

“OK, this is cool…but of course I’m just getting the results in Japanese! Now what?!”

Don’t fret; remember we’re using Google, so just go ahead and open up another tab in your browser and fire up translate.google.com and paste the website URL in there. Of course it’s machine translation, but you’ll still get the important information like dates, times, and locations out rather easily.

“You know what? I’m too lazy for all that… Can ya help a slacker out?”

Sigh… Yeah, OK– check out this list that we ganked off of this other website.
